Invoking former CPI(M) general secretary Harkishen Singh Surjeet’s advocacy of political alignment to take on communal forces, the Congress on Saturday said incumbent general secretary Prakash Karat should let go of his “personal anger” and strengthen secular forces.

“He (Karat) has to be on the side of the secularists if he is a secularist,” AICC spokesperson Manish Tewari told reporters here. “It’s time for him to spit out his personal anger,” he said.

“CPI(M)’s Politburo should think whether the political alignment advocated by Harkishan Singh Surjeet after the Babri Masjid demolition is still relevant. Congress thinks so,” said Tewari. The Congress’ overtures come at a time when many UPA constituents, including the NCP and the RJD,have begun talks with the Left in view of the post-poll scenario.
