To mark its resurgence as an independent contesting party, the Student Organisation of India (SOI) organised a car rally on the Panjab University (PU) campus on Thursday. The theme was to make the campus violence-free. The rally comprised more than 100 cars carrying party posters with supporters raising slogans.
The rally commenced from the boys hostel number one and proceeded towards Law department,on the way covering Gandhi Bhawan and University Business School (UBS). It also headed towards the department of Botany,Psychology,Physics,Chemistry and Geology via girls hostels. Addressing students at UIET,party president Manpreet Singh Sekhon said,The main agenda of the party is to make the campus violence and crime free and to change the image of the university from a fenced and guarded police colony into a peaceful and conducive educational institution.
He said the reputation of the university has been tarnished due to violent activities on the premises and,as a result, students think twice before taking admission. Another important issue that the party president asserted to tackle seriously was to ensure proper accommodation facilities for students.
Despite the availability of 15 hostels for boys and girls, many deserving students are left waiting for rooms.
On the contrary, students who are not even registered with the university or are local residents of the Tricity, are comfortably residing in these hostels with the help of influence of ruling parties.
Presidential candidate of the party,Bhupinderbir Singh Randhawa, said the rally is an illustration of the massive growth and power that the party entails. He said the workers have also been contributing individually to strengthen the foundations of the party.
