Bharatiya Janata Party’s Mahila Morcha chief Smriti Irani visited Bhagwanpura village near Batala on Thursday and met the Dalit woman who was allegedly paraded naked by another family of the same village last week. Smriti said she was pained to see the condition of the poor family and asked the police to act against the accused.

According to the police, the woman’s brother-in-law,Gagandeep Singh, had an affair with a girl whose father,Baldev Singh, was against this. As an act of revenge,Baldev’s family allegedly caught hold of the woman and brought her to their home, tore her clothes and asked her to go home in that condition. The police had allegedly refused to register a complaint initially but later booked and arrested Baldev Singh. The police had also denied that the woman was paraded naked.

Irani and other BJP leaders, including party’s state vice-president Kewal Kumar, also met Batala Senior Superintendent of Police D P Singh and sought that appropriate provisions be slapped against the accused. “There were allegations that the Sections under which the accused had been booked were not appropriate. The SSP has assured me an independent probe into the episode,” said Smriti.
