After Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi,it was the turn of his Madhya Pradesh counterpart to suffer his share of embarrassment over the rescue efforts in Uttarakhand. The identity of a young girl who flew with Shivraj Singh Chouhan on a special flight from Dehradun to Bhopal claiming she had lost her parents in the tragedy remained unclear till late Tuesday.

A man identifying himself as father of Snehlata, who the state government claimed was found by its rescue team, turned up in Bhopal on Tuesday morning, along with another girl, who claimed to be the rescued girl’s sister.

Chouhan, while promising a government job to Snehlata, said he was moved when he learnt that she went to Uttarakhand to trace her dead parents. The government claimed she was admitted to JP Hospital as she had not eaten anything for days. When the girl’s kin turned up in Bhopal, the government posted policemen around the hospital to prevent the media.

Sources said the realisation that something is amiss came late on Monday when a document found in the girl’s bag identified her as Neha,a resident of Mehgaon in Bhind. Since the girl’s purported ordeal was shared by Chouhan himself, the administration quickly traced her parents who were found in the Bhind village. The government first issued a clarification and later took it off its website.

While an SDM in Bhopal was asked to conduct an inquiry,Bhind Collector was asked to make a background check of all the girl’s kin. Collector C D Chakravarty said the administration had “sufficient information” about the family but would make a comment only around Wednesday noon.

The Congress slammed Chouhan and called it an attempt to get “cheap publicity”. Leader of Opposition Ajay Singh said the government should come clean on the girl’s identity and under which circumstances was she found. “Why did he first take the girl to his official bungalow and later suddenly got her admitted?’’ Singh asked.
