The Supreme Court on Wednesday reserved orders on the AIADMK petition seeking contempt against Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi and Union Minister for Shipping and Transport T R Baalu in the Setusamudram bandh case.
On the alleged remarks of Baalu against the court, saying why it held a unprecedented hearing on Sunday to ban the bandh, the Bench of Justices B N Aggrawal and G S Singhvi observed,It shows utter ignorance of such men. They are the people who are governing the system. They should know that for the past 50 years, courts in India have been working on Sundays.
Baalu had criticised the court for sitting on Sunday to stay the bandh called by ruling DMK-led Front in Tamil Nadu on October 1,2007.
The Benchs remarks came during the hearing of a petition filed by the AIADMK.
Counsel Guru Krishna Kumar, appearing for the AIADMK,alleged that despite the stay on bandh by the apex court, the DMK and its allies had gone ahead with the bandh. The court wanted the original recording of Baalus speech.
