The BIJU Janata Dal’s hopes of forming an alliance of non-BJP and non-Congress parties in Orissa received a jolt on Wednesday with the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) unilaterally releasing its list of candidates for 10 Assembly and one Lok Sabha constituencies.

The Naveen Patnaik-led party, which was keen on gaining newer allies, lost its first partner in NCP after it broke away from the BJP on March 7.

Though Union Minister and senior NCP leader Praful Patel had met Patnaik and his advisor Pyari Mohapatra last week to thrash out a seat-sharing arrangement, the talks seemed to have come a cropper.

NCP state president Prashanta Nanda declared the list of candidates for the Assembly seats. They are Prashanta Nanda (Begunia),Amar Prasad Satapathy (Badachana),Naveen Nanda (Dhenkanal),Utkal Keshari Parida (Patakura),Siddharth Das (Sambalpur),Purnachandra Minz (Talasara),Udaya Majhi (Rairangpur),Ramachandra Hansda (Saraskana),Sudarshan Pradhan (Remuna) and Zakir Hussain (Narla).

NCP MLA Arun Dey would be the party candidate from the Balasore Lok Sabha seat. BJD immediately reacted to the NCP list, terming the move as unethical and one-sided. BJD spokesperson Damodar Rout said his party would not accept NCP’s decision.
