Congress president Sonia Gandhi kicked off the party’s election campaign in Andhra Pradesh on Friday with her first public meeting at Kothagudem in Khammam district. The coal town, which is also a Communist stronghold, witnessed a massive turnout to hear Sonia speak at Chanchapalli grounds. Khammam is also the Lok Sabha constituency represented by Union Minister for Women and Child Development Renuka Chowdhury.

“For some, secularism, social justice and people’s welfare are mere slogans and hollow promises but for the Congress party these are the principles,” said Sonia. Urging the people to vote the Congress back to power in Andhra Pradesh, she said that the Opposition parties had not achieved anything of merit. Sonia is on a two-day visit to the state.
