The self immolation of 25-year-old Abhishek Choubey on Tuesday outside South Block in New Delhi has left his teachers back home in Jharkhand’s Garhwa district shocked. His teacher Randhir Singh remembers Abhishek was “highly sensitive and emotional” — a trait that perhaps led him to take this extreme step.

Abhishek had been to Kuwait twice, but he wasn’t lucky the third time when he failed to secure a visa. He had worked as a plumber in Kuwait in 2005 and 2008. “On his return,he had found a job with a private firm in Visakhapatnam in Andhra Pradesh,” informed his teacher Sanjay Majhi, adding that he used to live with his mother Malti at Visakhapatnam when he got yet another chance to go to Kuwait. However, despite his efforts,he couldn’t get a visa — a fact he had not told his parents.

His father,Ram Pravesh, who cremated his son on Tuesday night in New Delhi, said that he knew Abhishek wanted to strike gold in Kuwait,“but had never imagined that he would take such an extreme step”.

Jyoti Pandey,Abhishek’s neighbour in Garhwa, said,“He seemed perfectly normal. He was ambitious and wanted to go to Kuwait to work.”
