The Supreme Court on Thursday asked the CBI to reply in a week on a interim bail plea by Uttar Pradesh former principal secretary and IAS officer Pradeep Shukla, one of the accused in the multi-crore National Rural Health Mission (NRHM) scam.

Shukla’s plea cited his medical condition as the reason.

He is in jail in a case registered by the CBI pertaining to upgradation of 40 district hospitals,in which he was accused of taking bribe of over Rs 1 crore for favouring a private company and giving work to an incompetent agency. The matter pertained to 2009,when he was the Principal Secretary (Health). The High Court had on May 31 refused to grant regular bail to him, forcing him to move the apex court.
