The Supreme Court on Thursday permitted BJP MP J Shantha from Bellary (ST) Lok Sabha seat, whose election was set aside by the Karnataka High Court,to cast vote in the Presidential poll.

But a bench headed by Justice T S Thakur said that her vote would not be counted and be kept in a sealed envelope,to be opened only on the court’s direction.

Earlier, the SC had allowed her to attend parliamentary proceedings without exercising her voting right or availing any perquisite while staying the high court’s June 11 order which quashed her election.

Shantha is the sister of former state minister B Sreeramulu, who has floated his own party,Badavara Shramikara and Raithara Congress.

On June 11,the HC had set aside her election on a plea by Congress worker seeking her disqualification on the allegation of irregularities during the counting of votes.
