A fresh season of reality shows, starry debuts and new fiction launches — 2012 is likely to continue with the tried-and-tested formula

At the outset,2012 looks no different for the small-screen than in the year gone by. Whether it’s reality shows, soaps or game shows, television will be dishing out similar fare.

The trend of film stars making their TV debuts will continue with the biggest being Aamir Khan who is all set to do an issue-based show on Star Plus. Amitabh Bachchan will be back hosting Kaun Banega Crorepati 6 and there is talk of Madhuri Dixit judging the next season of Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa. Even Akshay Kumar, who appeared in the finale of Master Chef India 2,will reportedly make a comeback to the show this season.

Music and dance reality shows will be ongoing affairs on the small screen with fresh seasons of Dance India Dance,Indian Idol and Sa Re Ga Ma Pa,to name a few. While we have already seen Pakistanti singers making a mark in the desi talent shows like Sa Re Ga Ma Pa,Chhote Ustaad etc,Sahara One has taken the competition to a new level by pitting desi singers and those from across the border against each other in Sur-Kshetra. It has Atif Aslam and Himesh Reshammiya mentoring the Pakistani and Indian team of singers respectively.

Among the new shows, channels are trying to be innovative with new formats like Ring Ka King,a sports drama with Harbhajan Singh as the ‘goodwill’ brand ambassador. The show pits international wrestlers against desi pehelwans. This will be one of Colors’ big-ticket show. Then there’s Star Plus’ Survivor India adapted from the international format that tests the survival tactics of motley celebrities together on an island. It’s a different thing that we have seen a similar format in Mujhe Iss Jungle Se Bachaon a couple of years ago on Sony.

Over-the-top dramas are passe. Soaps are moving towards simple slice-of-life stories that are relatable and real. The success of Bade Acche Laggte Hai,which spinned off a spate of realistic soaps like Kuch Toh Log Kahenge,is set to continue with Kya Hua Tera Vaada and Na Bole Tum Na Maine Kuch Kaha among others

The trend of seasoned actors making a comeback in pivotal roles, which started last year with Ram Kapoor,Sakshi Tanwar,Mohnish Bahl and Shweta Tiwari, seems to be continuing. Mona Jassi Singh and Pawan Siddhant Shankar are set to make comebacks with Kya Hua Tera Vaada. While Mona has been anchoring reality shows after her debut with Jassi Jaisi Koi Nahi,Pawan, who shot to fame with Siddhant, disappeared from the scene after being seen in a couple of shows like Kasamh Se and Thoda Aasman Thodi Zameen. Then there’s Aamna Sharif of Kaahin To Hoga fame who had ditched TV to make it big on the silver screen. After appearing in a few flop films like Aloo Chaat and Aao Wish Karein, she is set to return to the small-screen with Pyaar Ki Naukri, which is said to be a love story between an older woman and a younger guy.

Na Bole Tum Na Maine Kuch Kaha

A love story about two different individuals who can’t stand each other. What’s different about this is that the guy is a self-centred bachelor while the heroine is a single mother of two kids. It stars Kunal Karan Patel and Akanksha Singh.

Survivor India

The show that begins airing from January 6 has celebrities like Payal Rohatgi,Shilpa Agnihotri,Abhinav Shukla,Karan Patel,Priyanka Bassi,J.D.Majethia,Timmy Narang and Rajesh Khera battling out for survival on a remote island in Phillipines. Star Plus believes it’s a breakthrough concept.

Kya Hua Tera Vaada

Mona Singh makes a comeback to acting with this serial about a married couple with three kids. Pawan Shankar, who plays Mona’s husband,is also returning to TV after a long gap. The serial is about how how romance between a couple takes a backseat, especially for the woman, with the arrival of kids.

Sur-Kshetra

Auditions for this music reality show that pits Indian and Pakistani singers against each other have begun. They are being conducted in six Indian and three Pakistani cities. Himesh Reshammiya captains the Indian team while Atif Aslam is the Pakistan team captain.

Coming soon

Blockbusters will continue to reign on the small-screen with movies like RA.One,Rockstar and Agneepath being aired on TV. Zee has reportedly bought the rights for the Hrithik Roshan-Priyanka Chopra starrer for ‘ 41 crore, while the Aamir Khan-Kareena Kapoor-Rani Mukerji starrer Talaash was sold to Sony for over ’38 crore and Star Plus is said to have paid ’35 crore for RA.One.

Veena Ka Vivaah

Veena Malik, who catapulted to fame after her stint with Bigg Boss,is gearing up to tie the knot through a swayamvar in Veena Ka Vivaah. Entries for the grooms have already been invited, though the telecast date is yet to be finalised.
