ABDUCTORS,suspected to be members of the National Liberation Front of Tripura, have demanded ransom to free the three men they took away from near the Indo-Bangladesh border in Mizoram on June 5.
The men, employees of an Assam-based private construction firm,Gautam Constructions, are reportedly being held in Bangladesh. Their firm is working with the National Buildings Construction Corporation to fence the border, police said.
Supervisor Nizamuddin, labourer Mithun and driver Birudon Chakma were near the border when their vehicle was ambushed and fired upon. Chakma tried to reverse and flee but rammed the vehicle into the barbed-wire fence. The abductors overpowered them and took them across the border.
The abductors have since made several ransom calls, police said. The first call to Nizamuddins brother Babuluddin demanded Rs 25 lakh for their release and two subsequent calls to the firm demanded Rs 50 lakh and then Rs 1 crore.
The BSF and Mizoram Police are jointly probing the case but have not made much headway for obvious reasons. Police chief A K Verma now plans to visit New Delhi and discuss the issue with officials in the foreign ministry,a senior police officer said.
