Women-oriented films are on the rise as Vidya Balan,Preity Zinta,Kareena Kapoor,Sridevi andKarisma Kapur wait in the wings with films where they play the hero

2011 started with a bang with the Vidya Balan-Rani Mukerji starrer No One Killed Jessica. A women-centric film,it was based on the murder of model Jessica Lal and highlighted her sister Sabrina Lal’s fight for justice. The film made an impact at the box-office and both the critics and audience raved about Rani’s and Vidya’s performances.

Towards the end of the year,Vidya re-established herself as a successful actor with her bold avatar in The Dirty Picture that got the cash registers ringing. This trend seems to be holding strong in the new year too. In the first half of 2012,Vidya hopes to consolidate her dream run at the box-office with Sujoy Ghosh’s Kahaani,a story about a pregnant NRI woman who comes to India in search of her lost husband.

With no well-known male lead, the film rests entirely on Vidya’s shoulders. Madhur Bhandarkar’s Heroine, which will release mid September, will see Kareena Kapoor in the role of a fallen superstar—quite a challenge for an actor who is in the prime of her career. Paired opposite Arjun Rampal,Heroine will see Kareena do what is probably her first real woman-centric role after the 2004 Chameli.

Two past Numero Unos of Hindi cinema,Sridevi Kapoor and Karisma Kapur, will make their long-awaited comebacks in 2012. Sridevi is the housewife protagonist in Gauri Shinde’s English Vinglish and Karisma stars in Vikram Bhatt’s Dangerous Ishq with Rajniesh Duggal as her co-star.

Clearly, these are reasons enough to believe that female-oriented cinema will thrive in the new year.
