Suspended CBI judge T Pattabhi Rama Rao was arrested on Tuesday by the Anti-Corruption Bureau for allegedly accepting a bribe of Rs 5 crore to grant bail to Bellary mining baron Gali Janardhana Reddy.
On June 1,the judge was suspended by the Andhra Pradesh High Court after the CBI complained that he,his son P Ravichandra and retired district judge T Chalapathi Rao had struck a deal with an aide of Gali to get him bail for a bribe of Rs 5 crore.
The investigating agency had recovered more than Rs 2 crore from various bank lockers operated by Ravichandra.
Justice Rama Rao was the Second Additional CBI Court Judge when the bail petition of Gali Janardhana Reddy was taken up on May 11. This was Galis fifth bail petition and Justice Rama Rao immediately granted him bail,a move which shocked the CBI which is investigating Gali for illegal mining.
After investigation, the CBI conducted raids and seized the cash given as bribe, phone records, and CCTV tapes from a hotel where the alleged deal was struck. While the High Court suspended Justice Rao,the state government handed over the investigation to ACB.
Justice Rama Rao is the third person to be arrested in the cash-for-bail case. His son Ravichandra and retired district judge Chalapati Rao were arrested last week.
