The government has appointed Subramaniam Ramadorai as an adviser to the Prime Minister on skills development with Cabinet rank. A notification is expected early next week.

This is the second big-ticket entrant into the government from the private sector after Infosys’s Nandan Nilekani, who also holds Cabinet rank, was appointed chairman of the Unique Identification Authority of India.

Ramadorai will continue to be the vice-chairman of TCS. One of the biggest challenges that India faces despite favourable demographics is availability of skilled human resources for gainful employment by the industry. According to National Skills Development Corporation, against 12.8 million annual new entrants to the labour force, the 30,000 skills training centres have a capacity to train only 3.1 million youth.
