Rajiv killing convict bags gold medal in diploma

A G Perarivalan,a death row convict in the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case,has bagged a gold medal in a diploma course,said the state prisons department on Thursday.

Perarivalan alias Arivu,41,secured first rank in DTP operator course conducted by the department through its multi-campus Mahatma Gandhi Community College spread across central prisons and other jails as part of its educational and vocational training programme. The exam was held in January 2012.

In all,said the department in a release,175 out of 185 candidates qualified.

Known as ‘education minister’ among inmates in the Vellore Central Prison where he is lodged,this is not the first time Arivu has come first in examinations.

Last year,he scored 91.33 per cent in Plus II,said to be the highest ever by an inmate. Through open university system,he has already obtained BCA,MCA,six other certificate courses and is said to be planning to register for an MPhil.
