The rains that lashed the township on Wednesday re-enforced the shoddy state of drainage system here, thereby rubbishing all claims of the Haryana Urban Development Authority (HUDA) that it was well-prepared to handle the monsoon downpour.
Waterlogging was reported from Sectors 6,2,4,12,15,16 and the Mansa Devi Complex. The worst-hit were residents of Sector 10,where floodwater entered as many as 150 houses.
Residents rued that their furniture and other domestic articles were damaged because of water seepage.
The Residents Welfare Association also gave a memorandum to HUDA to revamp the drainage system in the sector. Bharat Hiteshi, general secretary of the association, while recalling a similar incident in 2004,claimed that despite sending numerous reminders to HUDA to set up proper drainage system, the civic body has failed to act.
A similar situation was witnessed in Industrial Area in Panchkula,Barwala and Alipur, where industrial units were submerged in about three-feet deep water. General secretary of Industries Association,Barwala,Vikram Katyal said work was stalled for hours in factories due to waterlogging. Industrialists also staged protest against poor infrastructure in industrial area, outside the office of Haryana State Industrial and Infrastructure Development Corporation (HSIIDC) in Sector 6.
HUDA office in Sector 6 was also not spared by rains as water seeped in the office basement. Mandi Bhawan,Sector 6,and Public Works Department,Ghaggar division, were submerged in ankle-deep water. This led to a loss of documents and other records in HUDA office as well as Mandi Bhawan. Fire brigade was called in for relief operations.
