External Affairs Minister Salman Khurshid Saturday said the Congress was waiting for an indication, order or directive from party vice-president Rahul Gandhi to project him as the prime ministerial candidate for the 2014 elections.
We have considered him as our leader. We will wait for his indication, order or directive. We will walk in that direction, Khurshid said while returning from Indonesia along with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. Khurshid was responding to a question on whether Rahul, who predicted Thursday at a rally in UP that the 2014 election would produce a government of the youth, would be the one to head such a government.
Khurshid also said Rahul often picks the brain of experts before addressing political rallies. He knows what he is saying. When he said that Dalit development needed the escape velocity of Jupiter planet to escape its gravity,he may have consulted a physicist, he said.
Defending Rahuls statement rubbishing the ordinance on convicted lawmakers,Khurshid said,He took a principled stand, whereas the Cabinet was taking a practical stand.
Asked if Manmohan Singh could lead UPA-3,Khurshid said UPA-3 may be different from UPA-2,just as UPA-2 was different from UPA-1.
Commerce and Industry Minister Anand Sharma also took a similar stand on Rahul. There is no doubt that Rahul Gandhi is the accepted leader. Infusion of fresh blood is our practice. The government has to be reflective of the demographics and the aspirations of its youth, he said.
He has been mobilising the rank. He has brought fresh thinking and he understands India better than our opponents, Sharma said. Taking a dig at BJPs prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi,he said,He (Rahul) has not anointed himself and then embarked on a journey of India as done by others.
