The Punjab Assembly Speaker Thursday suspended nine Congress MLAs for the rest of the budget session for unparliamentary behaviour and ordered that an FIR be registered against those Opposition MLAs who had assaulted a policeman on Wednesday alleging raid on Congress Legislature Party office.

Earlier,as the House met in the morning,Speaker Charanjit Singh Atwal announced the suspension of nine Congress MLAs for the day’s session for their unparliamentary behaviour and insulting the Chair. The Speaker took exception to his chair being occupied by one of the Congress MLAs after the adjournment yesterday and termed it as “an insult to the Chair”.

He ordered the suspension Jagmohan Singh Kang,Charanjit Singh Channi,Raja Amarinder Singh Warring,Rana Gurjit Singh,Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa,Hardyal Kamboj,Kuljit Nagra,Balbir Singh Sidhu and Parminder Singh Pinky.

The Congress MLAs led by CLP leader Sunil Jakhar, walked out of the House raising slogans, forcing Atwal to adjourn the House.

As the House met again, the ruling SAD-BJP members expressed unhappiness over the “mild punishment” to the Congress legislators. Parliamentary affairs minister Madan Mohan Mittal moved a resolution following which the Speaker ordered the Congress MLAs’ suspension for the entire session.
