A Punjab legislator on Thursday met truck driver Gurjant Singh,who is in CID custody here on the charge of making an attempt on the life of Railway Minister Mamata Banerjee,and promised that efforts were being made to withdraw the case against him.
We are making a representation to Mamata didi so that the case against Gurjant is withdrawn, Mangat Rai Bansal,from Budhada,said after the meeting.
We have also assured him that all steps were being taken to secure his release from custody and legal steps were being contemplated to secure bail for him, he said.
Bansal said:I have spoken with Gurjant. He told me that the brakes of his truck failed and he lost control over the vehicle. I hope that he will get justice. Gurjants brother and his relative have boarded a train to Howrah and they would be reaching the city tomorrow.
Banerjee was injured after she was flung on the dashboard of her car after it was bumped by her escort car which was hit from behind by the truck driven by Gurjant,75 km from here at Kolaghat,where she had made an unscheduled stop for tea.
Gurjant was arrested on the charge of reckless driving and causing injury to a constable in the escort car,but was given bail by a district court the next day.
He was rearrested following a complaint filed by Trinamool Congress MP Subhendu Adhikari with a fresh case of attempt to murder filed against him.
The Left Front government handed over the case to the CID,which took Gurjant into custody after the court gave 12 days police remand.
Sangrur MP takes up drivers case with Mamata
