Punjab Director General of Police NPS Aulakh has been appointed Director General of National Security Guards.

This is for the first time that a Punjab cadre officer has been posted as the chief of the elite force. Highly-placed sources said that the Punjab Government got a fax message to this effect from the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) on Thursday evening.

Present NSG DG J K Dutt,of 1971 batch of West Bengal cadre,will retire on February 28.

Aulakh,a 1972-batch Punjab cadre IPS officer,was handpicked by Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal in 2007 to head the state police when the SAD-BJP came to power. Aulakh has served for long with the Border Security Force,first as DIG,then ADGP and Special DGP in the BSF.
