Punjab BJP leaders met senior party leader L K Advani on Saturday to seek his intervention to prevent Punjab CM Parkash Singh Badal from inducting his son Sukhbir Singh Badal as Deputy CM. They demanded the post be given to the BJP.

Badal, who has already taken Advani and BJP president Rajnath Singh into confidence about his son’s induction in his ministry,is also reaching the Capital to confer with Advani and other BJP leaders again to find a way to mollify his ally in the state.

The Punjab BJP leaders, according to sources, have told Advani that they are prepared to pull out of the Government and support Badal from outside if he is not prepared to meet their demand. The Punjab BJP has convened a meeting of MLAs and office-bearers at Chandigarh on Sunday to devise their strategy. The Punjab BJP had raised a demand for the deputy chief ministership immediately after Assembly elections, but it was dropped on the advice of the central leadership

“We have conveyed our viewpoint to him,” Punjab BJP legislature party leader Manoranjan Kalia told The Sunday Express after the 40-minute meeting. Sources said the delegation told Advani that normally, the dominant partner should give the post of Deputy CM to its junior ally. In case a state has two big communities, the CM,belonging to the dominant community, should pick his deputy from the other community.
