JD(U) president Sharad Yadav on Monday demanded a statement from the Home Minister regarding the reports of alleged rape committed by spiritual godman Asaram Bapu while CPI leader Gurudas Dasgupta shouted “Hang Asaram”.

Yadav made the remarks during a discussion in the Lok Sabha about the investigation of the gangrape of a photojournalist in Mumbai recently.

“I condemn the Mumbai incident. But,why did you not mention the misdeeds of a godman that have surfaced recently?” Sharad Yadav said, referring to Asaram Bapu. “He has raped a girl child. A punishment to him will send the right message”.

Home Minister Sushilkumar Shinde meanwhile assured the Lok Sabha of expeditious action against the culprits behind the gangrape of the photojournalist in Mumbai.

“The public order and the police are subjects exclusively dealt with by the states. The state government of Maharashtra will do its utmost to complete the investigation of the crime and prosecute the accused under law expeditiously. I condemn this incident,” Shinde said in a statement in the Lok Sabha on Monday.

Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Sushma Swaraj demanded that the government fix a time frame for expeditious trial and advocated hanging as a punishment. “You hang one or two of these beasts fast … and these incidents will stop,” Swaraj said in the Lok Sabha. Her suggestion received support from members across different parties.
