The incident occurred on the NH bypass near the Games Village at around 10:30 pm on Thursday.

“We have already arrested constable Ray under Section 302 of the IPC,and he has been remanded to three days custody on being produced before a magistrate today,” Additional SP Deori said.

Deori said the constable confessed that he got down from the Scorpio after the truck hit it from behind, and tried to stop it. But when the truck sped away,he hitchhiked on a motorbike that was passing by,and intercepted the truck. He then fired several rounds from his AK-47,causing immediate death to the driver. The handyman died later at the GMC Hospital. The driver of the truck has been identified as Krishna Chandra, from Tripura. The cleaner, from Meghalaya,is yet to be identified,Deora said.

Meanwhile, the All Assam Truck Drivers’ and Handymen Association has called for a 12-hour bandh in the state to protest against the incident and the alleged highhandedness of the police. Truckers on Friday also tried to block the NH bypass in the city.
