Days after a special TADA court in Mumbai allowed actor Sanjay Dutt to avail home food, table fan and toiletries of his choice in the jail, the authorities at the Yerawada Central Prison have filed an application in the court saying these facilities do not abide by the prison manual.

Dutt (53),whose sentence in the 1993 serial blasts was confirmed by the Supreme Court, had surrendered before the court in Mumbai on May 16. The court had granted him home food and medicines,a table fan, mattress, pillow, toiletries like toothbrush, toothpaste, soap and shampoo, copies of the Hanuman Chalisa,Ramayana and Bhagavad Gita. On May 21,Dutt was moved to Yerawada Jail, where he would be serving the remaining 42 months of his sentence.

Yogesh Desai, superintendent of Yerawada Jail, said,“We have filed an application in the court, citing the jail manual which does not allow the extension of these facilities.”

A senior officer with the jail said that the prison manual does not allow convicts or undertrials to avail home food and facilities like a table fan. “We have said in the application that these facilities cannot be provided as they were not as per the manual. As per the procedure,he can purchase these items from the jail can-teen….We have requested the court to look into it from the point of view of the jail manual,” the officer said.
