President gets rainfed area farming report

Suggesting a number of measures to enhance productivity,profitability and sustainability in rainfed area farming,President Pratibha Patil will hand over a report on the subject to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Friday.

The report,prepared by a 13-member committee of Governors headed by Punjab’s Shivraj Patil,was submitted to the President on Thursday.

Patil set up the committee last year to look into issues of increasing productivity and competitiveness of the agriculture sector in India with special reference to rainfed area farming.

The report is understood to have recommended policies and programmes for promotion of dryland farming,knowledge based agriculture in rainfed areas as well as prospects of food processing industry in such areas in the context of farmer-industry partnership.
