External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee has said hurdles in the global war against terror are put up by “unwillingness or lack of sincerity” on part of countries and any “architecture or framework” does not “stand in the way” of fighting the menace.

Mukherjee was speaking at a press conference on Monday in Dhaka where he was on a day-long visit. His remarks came with reference to Pakistan.“Architecture or framework does not stand in the way of fighting against terrorism, whatever it is — bilateral, regional or multilateral. But if there is inability, incapability or unwillingness to tackle the problem and fight against terrorism as a global issue, then the problem comes. There is no conflict between the regional architecture and the bilateral architecture. What is more important is the sincerity to fight against terrorism,” he said.

A South Asian task force against terrorism was an idea mooted by Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina following the Mumbai attacks. The two sides discussed the concept of setting up the task force during Mukherjee’s meetings with Bangladesh Foreign Minister Dipu Moni and Home Minister Sahara Khatun.

“I discussed the viability of the proposed task force with Prime Minister Hasina and Foreign Minister Dipu Moni, besides signing two agreements,” Mukherjee said.
