In a major embarrassment to the AAI,a portion of the false ceiling of the newly built domestic terminal of Chennai airport came down crashing on Monday morning. The two boarding gates near which it happened have been cordoned off following the incident.

At around 1.38 am,20 lightweight ceiling tiles, each measuring 4×4 feet, came undone near departure gates H1 and H2,right above the waiting area where there are chairs and space to queue up to get on the shuttle buses. However,as the area was empty because there were no flights scheduled at the time of the incident, the airport authorities were saved from a certain crisis.

The incident has raised questions about the quality of construction of the domestic terminal, built at a cost of Rs 2,863 crore and opened to public only a month ago. There are already criticisms ranging from design flaws to bad upkeep.

The airport police have filed a complaint and the senior officials have ordered an inquiry. The airport authorities blamed unexpected downpour and heavy thunderstorm for the incident. A strong gush of wind that “somehow reached the false ceiling created a wind tunnelling effect” that created the damage, said S Aboobacker, joint general manager,in a statement.
