A policeman was killed and another seriously injured when suspected militants attacked a team of polio vaccinators in northwest Pakistan on Wednesday,police officials said.

Two policemen protecting the vaccinators were injured in the shooting in Mardan town of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa province. One of the policemen died while being taken to hospital,Deputy Inspector-General of Police Zafar Khan told reporters. The other sustained serious injuries and was rushed to a hospital in Peshawar. The members of the polio vaccination team were safe,Khan said.

No group claimed responsibility for the attack,though the banned Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan has for long opposed the polio vaccination campaign.

On January 1,six women and a man working for a NGO involved in the polio vaccination campaign were shot dead in Swabi district of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa.
