A recklessly driven car caused the deaths of a 21-year-old youth and a seven-year-old boy. The accident has once again brought to light the need for stricter implementation of traffic rules. Residents of the city express their opinion on the incident and the need for stringent action against the guilty.

* Harjeet Singh,taxi owner
The girl’s driver license should be cancelled immediately. The statement of eyewitness will be vital in nailing the girl. It is only through him that the family of the deceased can learn on what transpired. The girls should be punished at the earliest,so that an example is set,which proves to be a deterrent for others. Financial help should be given to the families. Police seem to be working under pressure in this case.

* Major D P Singh,former principal,Government College,Sector 11
Many accidents have taken place on this stretch of road. There is a need for speed breakers,traffic lights and medians on the stretch. Apart from an eyewitness,there is no other evidence available. The girls managed to escape that night due to negligence of the police. Medical tests could also not be done on time. A lot of time has been wasted by the police.

* Madhav Bhatia,student
With yet another mishap in the city,the blame game has started again. People are blaming the police,who seem to be under pressure from the family of the accused. But no one thinks about our safety. There needs to be stricter enforcement of traffic rules. The police have failed to check instances of drunken and reckless driving. There could be more checks in various parts of the city,especially at night. This will prove to be a deterrent for those breaking traffic rules.

* Gurpreet Singh Somal,vice-president,Youth Club of Khuda Ali Sher
The girl should be punished immediately. Police are not working seriously in this case. Barriers must be put up between 8 pm and midnight. Medians,roundabouts speed breakers and police checkposts must be there to check accidents. Police should identify the killer stretches and measures should be suggested to prevent accidents at these places.

* Shobha Jindal,proprietor of Image Management Group
Parents need to instill right values in children. These days,parents tend to indulge their children too much. They should be taught the value of things. Parents are more responsible in this case. The family has been trying to protect the girl and has been lying to the media. Police always seem to be under pressure,if there is a case involving an influential family. The guilty persons should be punished at the earliest.

* Balwinder Singh,retired principal,Government College,Sector 11
Law and order situation in the city has deteriorated considerably. Everyday,we witness accidents. There needs to be stricter checks by the police. There are no barriers at night. Rules to get licenses should also be made stringent.
