A delegation of Shiromani Akali Dal leaders led by Parkash Singh Badal Thursday met President Pranab Mukherjee to seek pardon for Devinderpal Singh Bhullar, whose mercy plea was rejected last week.

After the meeting,Badal said the delegation requested the President to pardon Bhullar for the sake of “hard-earned communal harmony and peace in Punjab and the rest of India”.

The plea submitted by SAD said Bhullar was not in a fit state of mind and even the External Affairs Ministry had suggested commutation of his death sentence.

The SAD leaders are learnt to have told the President that Bhullar’s case wasn’t a “rarest of the rare” cases and, therefore, the Supreme Court’s verdict upholding the death sentence awarded to Bhullar be “reviewed” and that he be “acquitted in the interest of justice”.

SAD plea under consideration,says Shinde

Home Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde Thursday said that the Centre is considering the Punjab government’s plea for clemency for Khalistani terrorist Devinderpal Singh Bhullar.

“The Chief Minister of Punjab and the Deputy Chief Minister met me and handed over a memorandum. They have given the same memorandum to the Prime Minister and the President. Their representation is under consideration,” Shinde said.

He also said family members of all death row convicts should be informed well in advance about the possible hanging and be allowed to meet them before the execution.
