With the 2009 Maoist attack on public sector aluminium major Nalco fresh on its mind, the Naveen Patnaik government on Tuesday passed the Odisha Industrial Security Forces Bill that would enable the state to have its own specialised industrial force units for securing private and public sector enterprises.
Placing the Odisha Industrial Security Forces Bill 2012,the government said due to the states rapid industrialisation and various security threats to industries, vital installations and other important establishments, such a force was necessary.
The government said the existing state police force dealing with multiple duties and responsibilities was inadequate to meet the need for industrial undertakings.
The force to be headed by a police officer of inspector general rank will have more than 1,000 armed men. Any PSU or private sector that asks for the services of the OISF will have to bear the cost of the requisition.
As per the Bill,OISF officials can arrest or search a person without a warrant who threatens to assault or uses force against the company employees.
