Gujarat Assembly Speaker Ganpat Vasava has ordered a probe into media reports of two BJP MLAs reportedly caught watching porn on Tuesday even as the Budget Session was on. The Speaker blamed the media for “intentionally defaming elected representatives” and interpreted the news reports as a “breach of privilege” of the Assembly.

On Wednesday, when the Assembly convened, the Speaker suspended all Congress MLAs for the day after they demanded suspension of the two BJP MLAs. The House was adjourned within minutes of the ruckus.

BJP MLAs Shankar Chaudhary from Radhanpur and Jethabhai Bharwad from Shehra were reportedly caught watching porn on Chaudhary’s iPad for 20 minutes inside the Assembly. Embarrassed by reports in three local dailies on Wednesday, the BJP called it a “conspiracy against the Gujarat government”.

Chaudhary and Bharwad were reportedly caught surfing porn sites while Civil Supplies and Panchayat Minister Narottam Patel was speaking on budget demands. As a part of the inquiry,Chaudhary’s iPad will be sent to the forensic science laboratory. The Congress has rubbished this investigation as a farce.

Both Bharwad and Chaudhary are very close to Chief Minister Narendra Modi and were active in mobilising crowds for his Sadbhavana fasts. Both are also accused of rioting.

Reacting to the Speaker suspending Congress MLAs,Leader of Opposition Shaktisinh Gohil said that it was like the same authority playing the police and thief. “Had the iPad been seized yesterday,we could have hoped for some justice. And the iPad has been given to the state government’s agency,Gujarat FSL,” said Gohil.

Chairman of Congress party’s campaign committee Shankersinh Vaghela said,“If the inquiry is not ordered on the Karnataka pattern,we will protest.”

The Speaker said: “I feel that certain elements are intentionally conspiring to malign and insult the House… In a parliamentary democracy it cannot be tolerated that the media intentionally tries to defame people’s elected representatives and due to that the whole Assembly gets discredited… I feel this matter is breach of House’s privilege.”
