Justifying the induction of the tainted Babu Singh Kushwaha, the BJP on Tuesday said there were no charges against him and that he had been made a scapegoat by the Mayawati government.

“The UP Chief Minister is directly responsible for corruption in the state. There are no charges against Kushwaha. He has been made a scapegoat for face-saving by Mayawati,” BJP state unit chief Surya Pratap Shahi said here.

Senior BJP leader Rajnath Singh told The Indian Express that both Kushwaha and Badshah Singh had never stepped down from their ministerial posts on the basis of any charges but on moral grounds. “Unhone naitikta ke aadhar par apna istifa diya tha. Yeh baat to khud Mayawati ne sweekar kiya tha,” he said. He rejected the contention that BJP ranks in the state were upset over the decision to induct the tainted former BSP ministers.

BJP vice-president Vinay Katiyar, who was instrumental in bringing in Kushwaha, said: “What factory has Mayawati got that her wealth has increased manifold since she came to power.”
