The Bhavnagar unit of Youth Congress has extended its support to the ongoing agitation against the proposed Nirma cement plant in Mahuva. BJP Mahuva MLA Dr Kanu Kalsaria has been leading the protest.

“The Congress has extended us unconditional support. We have accepted it wholeheartedly as our aim is to ensure that the plant doesn’t come up on a water body,” said Kalsaria.

He added that they would attend a meeting organised by the Youth Congress in Ahmedabad on Friday to discuss the effects of mining work to be done for the plant.

District Youth Congress president Digvijaysinh Gohil could not be contacted.

People from nine villages in the region have been protesting against the proposed plant for two years now as the land allotted by the government to Nirma includes a wasteland,a water body spread over 100 hectares and grazing lands at Amlia,Gajarda,Delia, and Dudheri villages among others.

These are located on the coastal belt of Mahuva block in Bhavnagar district.

“The manner in which the government has granted land for industrial purpose is not fair because they never consulted locals, who are going to be affected. If the government wanted,it could have said no to the project after protests from the farmers, but this was not done,” Kalsaria said.
