In the wake of the sexual assault of hearing and speech impaired girls in a government-aided residential school, the registration of the NGO that ran the school has been cancelled and an outstanding grant of Rs 40 lakh has been denied to it. A three-member probe committee has begun its investigation into the incident.

Eight new cases of physical abuse have been reported after counselling sessions with the girls. Sources said that despite regular complaints, the NGO Awaaz Foundation authorities tried to cover up the cases of abuse until one of them was suspected to be pregnant. Social activist and general secretary of People’s Union for Civil Liberties (PUCL),Kavita Srivastava, sought the suspension of the Additional District Magistrate,Jaipur, who renewed the registration of the NGO in March.
