Struggling Internet firm Yahoo’s new CEO Marissa Mayer has laid out a road map to reverse the declining usage of its Internet service,a media report has said.
Mayer who took over Yahoo three weeks ago “has talked with Yahoo’s product leaders about how to reverse the declining usage of the company’s search and email service,” The Wall Street Journal said citing source.
According to the daily,the former Google executive,Mayer has repeatedly told her employees to focus on users.
“She has also told employees that she wants to rewire Yahoo to develop or acquire Web services that take advantage of new platforms such as social networking,mobile devices,and technology that gives people information about their immediate surroundings,including local businesses,” the daily said.
According to the daily,Mayer’s emphasis on products and users is different from her predecessors.
Mayer’s immediate predecessor and interim CEO Ross Levinsohn focused on increasing ad revenue by striking partnerships with other content sites and unloading some of Yahoo’s ad technology,while,Scott Thompson wanted the company to expand its e-commerce business and exploit user data to help advertisers.
37-year-old Mayer,has told colleagues she won’t announce a strategic plan before she finishes reviewing Yahoo’s businesses,the daily said.
According to the publication,a spokesperson for Mayer declined to comment on the issue.
As part of her product push,Mayer has given employees signals that she wants to revamp the Yahoo Web-search service,given her background as a search executive at Google.
“Mayer is expected to acquire companies that employ talented programmers and product managers,something she did frequently at Google,as well as buy companies with nascent products that Yahoo could help develop,” the daily said citing a source.
Yahoo in recent years has struggled with stiff competition from Google and others which have eclipsed the company in online advertising,the daily said.
