Here’s looking at what’s in store for the auds in 2012

The focus on women-centric films will continue in 2012. The year looks strong with Vidya Balan, who will be seen in Sujoy Ghosh’s Kahaani after the success of The Dirty Picture while Sridevi will be seen in an author-backed role in English Vinglish, directed by debutante Gauri Shinde. Kareena Kapoor will heighten the glamour quotient with her turn in Madhur Bhandarkar’s Heroine. This year will also see the return of actresses Sridevi and Karisma Kapur in English Vinglish and Dangerous Ishq respectively.

Sequels and technology, too, seem to be the buzzwords with Bollywood this year. Thus,Vikram Bhatt and Shirish Kunder will release Dangerous Ishq and Joker in 3D. Both movies are significant because they do not cater to the horror or children’s genre that is typically the domain of 3D films. In an aside,James Cameron’s 1997 mega-hit Titanic will also release in 3D.

On the other hand, sequels of Once Upon A Time In Mumbaai,Jannat,Raaz,Housefull,Dabangg and Kya Kool Hai Hum is the other noteworthy trend. Also most sequels have a new star cast and director,a trend that has come about probably to compensate for the common grouse that Bollywood is bankrupt for ideas and resorts to sequels to make a quick buck. Murder 2 showed that sequels can work and filmmakers will be hoping that the same is true of their sequels as well.

Action is another buzzword for Bollywood after the stellar success of movies like Bodyguard and Singham in the year gone by. 2012’s first multi-starrer Players features a gold heist and the movie’s stunts are a major selling point according to the makers. Even the rom-com loving Dharma Productions is producing Agneepath,an out and out actioner with Hrithik Roshan and Sanjay Dutt. This will be followed by Prabhudeva’s Rowdy Rathore,Salman Khan-starrer Ek Tha Tiger,Saif Ali Khan’s Agent Vinod and the multi-starrer Tezz among others that is slated to push the conventional boundaries of action movies.

For audiences who follow new trends, the year holds promise. From star kids like Arjun Kapoor (Boney and Mona Kapoor’s son),Ahana Deol (Hema Malini and Dharmendra’s daughter),Varun Dhawan (David Dhawan’s son) and Alia Bhatt (Mahesh Bhatt and Soni Razdan’s daughter) to foreign imports like Amy Jackson and Sunny Leone to Southern imports like Ileana D’Cruz,Tapsee Pannu and Lakshmi Manchu, new talent will be tested on a regular basis through the year.

If Hindi movies have not managed to put you in a thrall already, cast your look westwards at some brilliant feature films coming from Hollywood. The Dark Knight Rises has generated so much curiosity that it easily tops every filmgoer’s wish list today. The rise of Bane (Tom Hardy),an extremely strong villain and Anne Hathaway, who plays Catwoman, along with director Christopher Nolan have spawned a range of discussions about the final Batman movie. On the other hand,The Amazing Spider-Man and the James Bond franchise have been completely rebooted and promise to offer a lot of thrills in their upcoming outings. Sequels to action films like Men In Black,Ghost Rider,Underworld,Resident Evil among others as well as serious fare in the form of Hugo,Moneyball and The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo will delight lovers of pop as well as art cinema.

With so much happening in the year ahead,it is safe to assume that audiences have a steady dose of entertainment headed their way,one Friday at a time.
