A woman being molested on the streets of Guwahati earlier this week was aired on Thursday by a couple of local and national news channels,prompting Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi to announce the setting up of a task force to prevent crimes against women. Three persons were arrested for the crime.

While the incident took place in front of a bar on the busy GS Road in the heart of the city late on Monday night,the issue gathered momentum on Thursday with TV channels beaming visuals that showed how a mob tore down the clothes of the woman.

“We have already arrested three persons in connection with the incident,while three others have been identified,” Guwahati City SSP Apurba Jiban Barua said. The woman,Baruah said,was coming out of the bar when she was accosted by a group of men — “mostly young” — who physically assaulted her and tore off portions of her cloth.

The three arrested persons are Dhanraj Basfor,Pushpendra Das and Bikash Tewari. “We have identified three others,and hope to arrest them by Friday,” the SSP said. Gogoi has directed the police to immediately arrest the culprits.

Two local TV channels had managed to record the incident.
