Late this evening,West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee held a meeting of her MLAs,passed a condemnation resolution against Railway Minister Dinesh Trivedi for proposing a hike in rail fares. Firad Hakim,Minister for Urban Development, even called him Mir Jafar Dinesh and announced a campaign against him across the state and in Trivedis Barrackpore constituency.
Surely,in a party where Mamata cannot be questioned, all the MLAs will fall in line. But the fact is that just hours earlier, all the MLAs from the seven Assembly segments in his constituency where he won the Lok Sabha elections in 2009 sang Trivedis praise when contacted by The Indian Express.
Ironically, one of them is Subhrangshu Roy,son of Mukul Roy. As his father waits to succeed Trivedi, the son calls him a great helping hand in the development of railway station, allocating funds for projects that Didi envisaged.
Said Subhrangshu Roy: Our MP (Trivedi) has always been cooperative with us and sanctioned all the projects we submitted. With his MP funds,we have started four schools and a park here. He gave shape to all of Didis plans. All the work in my Assembly segment was initiated by Didi but it was implemented by Dinesh Trivedi. The work for setting up of the Kanchrapara rail coach factory has started and the work for metro rail project from Barrackpore to Baranagar route has also been started.
On the hike, however,Roy said: We cannot afford to work as individuals,we work as an entity and are bound by party guidelines.
Uttam Das,chairman of the Barrackpore municipality, points to two brand new mobile medical vans, both donated by Trivedi. Said MLA Silbhadra Dutta: As an MP,Dinesh Trivedi has been a great help to us. He sanctioned all our projects and his MP funds helped us launch schools, build roads. But we should know that we are all elected because of the portrait of Mamata Banerjee.
Arjun Singh,MLA of Bhatpara said: Dinesh Trivedi has given us and his constituency more than what was expected. The rail coach factory construction work has started. The Metro rail link work has started. He has installed computerized reservation system in all the stations which come under his constituency.
This is echoed by Rafikur Rahman,MLA of Amtala: My Assembly segment is the only rural segment in Barrackpore but Dinesh Trivedi never neglected us. He visited more than 10 times in the last one year and he has sanctioned more than 30 projects.
Said Parash Dutta,MLA of Jagaddal: He allotted around Rs 78 lakh for projects in my constituency. He sanctioned all the projects I submitted to him. I feel that he should have taken the decision (to hike fares) after much thought. Such praise is expected to fall silent any day now given the orders from Mamata Banerjee.
