In Ganderbal’s first encounter in two years,an unidentified militant was killed. The encounter is still going on in the central Kashmir’s district.

In Ganderbal’s first encounter in two years,an unidentified militant was killed on Sunday. The encounter is still going on in the central Kashmir’s district.

Police said on a tip off,a joint party of police and security forces cordoned off Herpora Chatergul village in Kangan area,60 kilometres from Srinagar. The militants,thereafter,opened fire on the troops who retaliated resulting in an encounter.

A senior police official said that as the area was cordoned,the militant took refuge inside a residential house and started firing at the troops. “The operation began at 8 am and is still on. The residential house,in which militants had taken shelter,was completely gutted in the encounter,” he said.

A police spokesman in Srinagar said one body along with an AK 47 rifle has been recovered from the debris. “We are trying to identify the militant. The slain militant is said to be from Swat in Pakistan. Search operation is still going on. More militants are said to be holed up in the area.”
