In what appears to be an incident of Kerala’s growing mistrust towards migrant workers,a person, reportedly Hindi-speaking,was beaten to death in Palakkad district on Monday night.

The police are yet to identify the victim who’s body was found on the premises of a house at Kuzhalmannam police limits. House owner Kuttamani,60,told the police that “the stranger” attacked him when he questioned his presence in the house compound.

“The stranger” allegedly hit Kuttamani with a wooden panel. He raised an alarm and his family members rushed. They fatally hit the person.

Investigation officer P C Haridas said the family had told him that the stranger was speaking in “Hindi-like language”. “They might have suspected him to be a thief. But the house has little to attract the attention of a burglar,” he said.

The police took the dead person’s photo to nearby work sites and camps of migrant workers but none of them were able to identify him. “We have registered two cases,” said the officer.

However, activists working among north Indian migrant workers’ community said the workers would be reluctant to identify the person due to the fear of being implicated in the case.
