Asserting that the Indian media was often promoting “superstitions” and “other backward ideas” thereby diverting attention from the “real issues”,Press Council of India Chairman Justice Markandey Katju on Thursday said the freedom of the media cannot be regarded as “always good”. In a statement on the occasion of World Press Freedom Day,Katju said,“Instead of promoting scientific thinking… the Indian media often promotes superstitions and other backward ideas,and often diverts attention of the Indian people….”
