While the Ministry of External Affairs did not issue an official response to the ambush in which five soldiers were killed along the LoC,it called in Pakistan’s Deputy High Commissioner Mansoor Ahmed Khan on Tuesday to lodge a formal protest.

Sources said that the Pakistani diplomat was conveyed a similar statement, which was issued by Defence minister A K Antony.

Earlier in the day, with the opposition demanding suspension of talks,External Affairs Minister Salman Khurshid said,“No one should think we are weak, but at the same time,we are in government and have a responsibility. Sadly, the opposition does not understand,we know our national interests and responsibilities… we will take appropriate steps.”

“We don’t want to throw the baby out with the bath water. We don’t want to create a situation that is detrimental and destructive for India’s security and peace. We will do whatever is absolutely necessary in national interest.”

Asked about the Opposition’s demand for a befitting reply to Pakistan,Khurshid said,“I don’t want to behave like the opposition behaves. I wouldn’t take their advice.”
