Mayookh Bhaumik has won this years National Award for the Best Background Score for Kaushik Gangulys yet-to-be-released film Laptop. He began his career in music with the tabla before changing channels. His earlier films are Herbert directed by Suman Mukhopadhyay,Aamra directed by his brother Mainak Bhaumik,Padakhep, directed by Suman Ghosh and Eeshwar Mime Company directed by the late Shyamanand Jalan.
Laptop does not have any lip-sync songs and the music plus one song are on the soundtrack. A special song by Anupam Roy was filmed for the promo but is not there in the actual film, says Ganguly, thrilled that the award arrived before the films release. Laptop was in the Indian Panorama at the IFFI,Goa and the only Indian film at the Dubai International Film Festival.
The four stories in the film are connected by a laptop. Kaushikda asked me to create a theme that would express this musically and reflect the role of the laptop in the lives of the characters, explained Mayookh. There is also a mountain theme that blends into the laptop theme. Mayookh shares the credit with his musicians Kinan Azmeh from Damascus who played the clarinet,Tapas Roy famous for pluck-string instruments and vocalist Ishita Chakraborty who has sung an Armenian gospel piece,a variation on the laptop theme.
The laptop is the protagonist in the film and literally binds the strands of four stories together through its physical presence, metaphorically, through its power to become a strong bond of communication but more importantly emotionally, through its ability to command memory sometimes, even beyond the human beings capacity to remember. It is very much alive because it has a memory and its memorymaneouvres the story in this film, says Ganguly.
