The Mayawati government had built the Kanshi Ram Green Eco Garden, but the place has no or very little greenery. Now,the Akhilesh Yadav government has decided to turn it “green”.

Spread over 73 hectares at the cost of Rs 1,075 crore, the garden has date palm, bamboo and banana trees, all made of bronze. It also has bronze statues of elephants, chimpanzee, rhinoceros, hippopotamus, deer, bear, tiger, leopard, crocodile, tortoises, rabbit, peacock, owl, eagle and hawk.

A senior official of the management and maintenance committee of the parks and memorials said that they have decided to undertake tree plantation in the garden, beginning July 4,which is the first day of Van Mahotsav,in order to give it a green cover. The Forest Department recently did a survey of the garden and identified the places along the boundary wall inside the garden for plantation of trees. The department has also selected the types of trees to be planted, the official said. “Presently there is no greenery in the garden. There is only a central mound having grass cover and two northern and southern lawns having plantation of cycas. Rest of the area has only stone structures that generate heat in the summers. There is no shade in the park that can give relief to visitors,” said an official.

The UP Rajkiya Nirman Nigam was the construction agency of the garden. A UPRNN official said that the BSP government had spent Rs 36 crore on the bronze statues of animals and trees. It had deployed 1,261 employees to maintain the garden.

PWD minister Shivpal Singh Yadav had inspected the garden on June 9 and questioned the utility of the bronze statues.
