Mayaram to succeed Gopalan as DEA secretary

Srivastava appointed civil aviation secretary

The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) on Thursday approved a slew of high level appointments,filling up posts in the ministries of finance and civil aviation.

Accordingly,Rajasthan cadre officer Arvind Mayaram is the new secretary,department of economic affairs (DEA). Mayaram,who belongs to the 1978 batch of the Indian Administrative Service (IAS) is currently serving as special secretary,and financial adviser,department of rural development.

He will take over from R Gopalan,a 1976 batch IAS officer of Tamil Nadu cadre,who retires on July 31. Mayaram is no stranger to North Block and has previously served as joint secretary (infrastructure division) in DEA between 2005-2008 when P Chidambaram headed the finance ministry.

The ACC has also approved the appointment of KN Srivastava as secretary,ministry of civil aviation after incumbent SNA Zaidi retires this month-end. Srivastava,a 1978 batch IAS officer of Karnataka cadre,is currently special secretary and financial adviser in the ministry of external affairs.

Both Zaidi and Gopalan are expected to get plum post retirement jobs. While Zaidi,a 1976 batch IAS officer of the Uttar Pradesh cadre has been nominated by his ministry for the post of president of the council of the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO),Gopalan is tipped to become a member of the Fourteenth Finance Commission that is in the process of being set up.
