Maoists kill sarpanch in Malkangiri

Being at the receiving end of police operations for the past few months, the Maoists in southern Orissa district of Malkangiri have hit back at the state government, killing a 50-year-old sarpanch after branding him as a police informer.

Malkangiri SP Akhileshwar Singh said a group of 25 armed Maoists swooped down on Kurmanur village under Kalimela block and dragged village sarpanch Madhab Kirasani away. “After trying him at a praja court he was beaten to death by the Maoists. His body was recovered from a forest area in neighbouring Poplur grampanchayat,” said the SP. The Maoists left a handwritten note, accusing Kirsani to be a police informer. The SP denied Kirsani was an informer.

The SP said the real reason of the killing seemed to be rivalry between tribals and the Kondareddy community, which aspires for tribal status. Kirsani,a tribal leader, did not get along with the Kondareddy community in his grampanchayat.

“The Maoists are supporting the Kondareddy community’s demand of ST status. The killing is a tactic to scare the tribals into supporting the Maoists,” Singh said.
