Agitated “over 40 conversions” in the last five years,a person threw a crude bomb at a church and later shot at its priest at Nasriganj,Sasaram on Sunday.The priest,Vinod Kumar,shot in his stomach,is being treated at a Varanasi hospital and is said to be out of danger.

The police have arrested the suspect,Rajesh Singh,said to be mentally challenged,and personnel have been deployed around the church for its protection and to prevent communal clashes.

Rajesh hurled a crude bomb at the hall of the church in Baraw village. When Vinod Kumar came out of his office after hearing the noise,Singh fired at him with his country-made pistol.

“The attacker was soon overpowered with the help of locals and police. He is suffering from cancer and is mentally deranged,” Additional Director General of Police Neelmani told The Indian Express.

The ADG said the attacker told the police that he had been “deeply affected with over 40 Hindus of the area converting to Christianity over the last five years”.

Singh also planned to hurl two more bombs at the church and later commit suicide. The police seized three live bombs and the pistol from the attacker.

Neelmani,however,added that no case of conversion had been reported from the area to the police.
