Nikhil Khadse, the only son of Leader of Opposition in the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly and Jalgaon MLA Eknath Khadse, committed suicide by shooting himself in the head Wednesday afternoon. Nikhil is survived by his wife Raksha and two sons.

He shot himself with his licenced revolver at about 4.15 pm in his bedroom at their residence bungalow ‘Muktai’ in Kothadi village in the Muktainagar taluka of Jalgaon district,60 km from Jalgaon town.

An engineering graduate,Nikhil is known to have been depressed for the past few years after losing the Maharashtra Legislative Council elections in 2010. In spite of his father’s best efforts,Nikhil was defeated by a candidate backed by Suresh Jain of the Shiv Sena. His attempt to get elected as an MLC had caused major fissures between the BJP and Shiv Sena. Although he subsequently managed to win a seat in the Jalgaon Zilla Parishad,Khadse had been suffering from depression after his defeat.

There are also reports that Nikhil had become an alcoholic after his defeat and had been to a rehabilitation centre about a month back. He had allegedly been confined to his house by his family following the rehabilitation. He is also said to have been suffering from a back ailment.

“He was rushed to Godavari Hospital in Jalgaon town. He passed away at around 6 pm. His father Eknath Khadse was in a wedding function in Muktainagar taluka itself at that time while Nikhil’s mother and wife were present in the house when he shot himself,” said Superintendent of Police,Jalgaon,S Jaykumar. He said only the autopsy report would reveal whether Nikhil was drunk when he pulled the trigger.
